Are paper gift bags recyclable?
A plain kraft paper bag is one of the more straightforwardly recyclable things in a house. A metallic, glitter-finished bag with ribbon handles is not recyclable at all. Between those two lies most of the shelf, and the difference comes down to four things.
The four things that decide it
Coating. Uncoated and matt-laminate-free paper recycles normally. A glossy plastic film laminated to the surface does not separate in a standard pulping process, and a bag with one is usually rejected.
Metallic and glitter finishes. Foil layers and loose glitter are contaminants. Glitter in particular is microplastic and it spreads through a paper stream. A glitter bag is not recyclable in kerbside collection anywhere.
Handles. Twisted paper handles go through with the bag. Ribbon, cord and plastic handles have to come out first — usually two seconds with a pair of scissors. Metal eyelets have to come out too.
Adhesive and tape. Small amounts of glue are fine and normal. Sticky tape stuck to the bag is not, and neither are adhesive labels.
The two-minute check
Before a bag goes in the recycling:
- Scrunch a corner. Paper stays scrunched; a laminated or foiled bag springs back. This is the simplest test there is.
- Cut off ribbon or cord handles and pull out any eyelets.
- Remove tape, labels and any tissue that is stuck on.
- If it has glitter, it goes in the general waste. There is no version of this where glitter is recyclable.
Grease or food residue also disqualifies paper — a bag used for a takeaway is contaminated in the same way a pizza box is.
What “recycled” on a label means
Two different claims get printed on bags and they are not the same.
Made from recycled material means recovered fibre went into producing the paper. It says nothing about what happens at the end.
Recyclable means it can be recycled again after use — which depends on the coatings and fittings above, and on what your local facility accepts.
A bag can be either, both or neither. Where a manufacturer makes one of these claims we repeat it word for word on the listing, and where they make no claim, the listing makes none either. We are not going to describe a bag as eco-friendly because it happens to be brown.
Kraft, and why it is brown
Kraft paper is made by a chemical pulping process that leaves the fibres long and strong, which is why kraft bags carry weight for their thickness. The brown colour is the natural colour of the unbleached pulp — the paper is brown because nobody spent energy making it white.
Bleaching kraft to white uses more process and produces slightly weaker paper. That is the whole difference between the brown and the white bags on this shelf; both are the same material.
Reuse beats recycling
The environmental arithmetic on a paper bag is dominated by manufacture. Using a bag five times rather than once cuts its impact per use by roughly the same factor, which no amount of correct recycling can match.
Gift bags are unusually easy to reuse because they are not damaged in opening. Two things extend their life:
- Use a gift tag tied to the handle rather than a sticker on the bag. Stickers tear the surface when removed.
- Store flat rather than folded, somewhere dry. A bag folded across the face keeps the crease permanently.
A reinforced-handle bag survives many more journeys than a die-cut one, which is a practical argument for the sturdier bag as much as an aesthetic one.
Composting
Plain uncoated kraft with paper handles composts, torn into pieces. Printed inks on modern bags are generally water-based and not a problem in a garden heap. Anything foiled, laminated or glittered does not compost, for the same reasons it does not recycle.
